For the brightest, sharpest, highest-contrast image quality, Tele Vue 90º and 60º diagonals are preferred. Note that diagonals yield an upright and left/right reversed image. If a correct image is required, consider the Tele Vue 45º erecting prism.
The magnification of a telescope is simply the telescope focal length divided by the eyepiece focal length. Example: 480mm/24mm = 20X.
Users who wear eyeglasses to correct astigmatism may wish to consider Tele Vue 60º Radian eyepieces, which have 20mm of eye relief and an adjustable eyeguard. Available 1-1/4" Radians focal lengths: 18mm, 14mm, 10mm, 8mm, 6mm, 5mm, 4mm, and 3mm. Other long eye relief Tele Vue eyepieces include 32mm Plössl.
1-1/4" 82º apparent field Nagler eyepieces available in addition to the13mm and 9mm options listed above are: 11mm, 7mm, 5mm, 3.5mm and 2.5mm focal lengths.
For stationary viewing, where weight and size are not an issue, wider fields are possible by using 2" eyepieces in a 2" 90º diagonal. An example would be to use the 22mm Nagler type-4 -- which has an 82º apparent field and 19mm eye relief. This yields 22x with 194-ft @ 1000-yards field in the Tele Vue 76 and 27x with 156ft @ 1000-yards field in the Tele Vue 85. Maximum fields are obtained with 55mm Plössl eyepiece: 288' @ 1000 yards at 9x magnification in TV-76, 230' @ 1000 yards at 11x in TV-85. The 55mm Plössl also requires a 2" diagonal.
